Navigating the digital signage eco-system 1

The digital signage market comprises hardware, software, content and operations providers. For a building manager with limited time, the complexities associated can seem overwhelming. What is the correct screen size and location? Which software is the best for my needs? What, how and who produces the content, and what if the screen experiences technical issues?
These are big issues and need serious consideration before making a commitment.

“Digital signage, important as it is, is often something not thought about during the construction phase. There are one-size-fits-all solutions on the market, but this is not the look you want in a business you have just spent 100 million building. ECN can install a solution that looks as if it was part of the original building plans without compromising on quality or cost”Elliott Clements, Senior Asset Development Lead

Digital Signage Hardware
The screen size and type should be appropriate for the location and indoor screens should have the capability to adjust to different lighting levels in the office environment. Screen resolution is crucial for clarity, especially for information dissemination, advertising, or entertainment. Commercial displays are often more durable and suitable for long-term use compared to consumer TVs, though they may be more expensive.

There are many different screen models and sizes to choose from, and it is important to research the market and compare pricing. Some manufacturers also offer content plans linked to their screen hardware, but this all adds to the cost. ECN’s cost-free managed digital signage solution takes the stress of choosing digital signage hardware out of your hands as we do it all for you.

Technical & maintenance support
Running and managing a digital signage screen can present technical issues on occasion, however, with proactive maintenance, issues can be dealt with promptly and efficiently. The most common tech issues will involve the screen and software, internet connectivity, content management and the display location.

Screen hardware and software compatibility
A digital signage screen needs a media player to successfully display the content and, if the compatibility between the screen and media player is not correct, the content might not display correctly. It is important that regular system health checks are conducted to preserve and enhance system performance.

Internet connectivity
A stable internet connection is essential, which means a wired connection should be given priority over wireless due to its increased reliability.

Content management
If you decide to manage your own digital signage content, you will require a CMS (content management system). Even though most CMS are SAAS platforms and therefore do not require much maintenance, it still requires trained staff and help if the CMS is not working.

Screen placement
While it might seem surprising, where the display is placed can impact its operation. Ideally, a screen should be placed in a well-lit environment as this reduces the need for maximum screen brightness, which in turn reduces energy usage and helps contribute to a longer screen life.

When you connect your office to ECN’s managed digital signage network, we take care of all hardware and software components listed above, meaning you do not need to worry about any maintenance or operational issues and can just enjoy the benefits of digital signage.
